Today a busy intersection in the East Village near New York University, Astor Place where it meets Lafayette and 8th Street was quite different in the mid-nineteenth century. At that time, the area was home to wealthy New Yorkers, their cultural institutions, and libraries. It also was the scene of a riot by, incredibly, theater-goers! Learn the stories behind the transformed — or not so changed — buildings that date back to those earlier days.

Highlights include:
  • Astor Place subway station
  • Astor Place riot
  • Cooper Union
  • Astor Library/Public Theater
  • Colonnade Row
